Taaro ke Bacche (Enfants des Etoiles) is a non-profit organisation working to create an inclusive and supportive environment providing holistic and personalised care for children with autism and Down's syndrome.
It was created in 2014 by Marie-Françoise Bisson, a former teacher and child psychologist with the Geneva Department of Education. She had travelled widely in India and realised that there was much lacking in this field. On retiring in 2009 she returned to India where, thanks to the friends she had made, she started working with children living with autism. She then went on to create Taaro ke Bacche for children with special needs.
Our vision
A world in which each person has a place, and persons with autism, Down's syndrome and other deficiencies are respected and empowered.
Our mission
To offer personalised holistic care for children with autism and Down's syndrome, support for their carers and training for specialised educators, thus ensuring that the children find their place in society. We also aim to increase awareness about autism in a society where there is very little understanding about this condition.
To create a space for...
– Joyful children, appreciated,
with self-esteem
– Supportive families
– Inclusive and integrated communities
– Sustainability

A new study shows that engaging young children with autism in a programme that involves fun and interactive play can have a positive affect on their cerebral activity. This research is the first to demonstrate that early behavioural intervention may be associated with normal patterns of brain activity and improved social behaviour in young children with autism.

Early Diagnosis – Academic skillsPsycho-educational and developmental intervention
Delaying diagnosis can be detrimental to the child. Diagnosis is possible as early as two years of age and sometimes even earlier, i.e. around 18 months.
Early diagnosis is critical for the child's development and essential to achieve a degree of autonomy and the ability to learn.
We offer:
Early Intervention Program for children between 3 and 6 years of age.
The participation of one or both parents is highly desirable.
Intervention is based on play, a positive environment, affection, and stimulation based on the child's own interests.
• a personalised project based on each child's own ability and chosen in partnership with the parents,
• a holistic approach,
• a psycho-educational and developmental intervention,
• a conventional school time-table.
Intermediate section for children between 7 and 14 years of age
The intervention consists of five different sessions:
• Morning routine: prayers, announcing the date, roll-call, poetry and singing,
• Yoga session,
• Class-room sessions for individual activities around cognitive learning,
• Sensory integration sessions,
• Creative activities and games after lunch.
Therapeutic follow-up
This specialised framework offers the child a regular individual follow-up, taking into account his or her needs and abilities, so that he/she can gradually achieve more autonomy.
Art and interactive games

Support for Families
Taaro Ke Bacche offers families:
• Information and guidance,
• Contact with other families living similar in situations.
The role of parents is essential in the child's education. The fact that the child is autistic does not in any way diminish the necessity to educate their child. We help parents to understand their child's behaviour.
Advice on diet and nutrition
In parallel with educational intervention, we promote a biomedical approach working closely with nutritionists.
Transportation
Distance is not an obstacle. If necessary, transport is provided.
Coming soon…
• In Autumn 2021, we aim to start offering pre-vocational training for our children reaching adolescence. This will cover baking, weaving and paper craft skills.
• Our long term plan is also to create a bakery in collaboration with Brown Bread Bakery offering healthy products and providing an opportunity for vocational training.
Our experience has shown us that with a certain degree of self-confidence and success in their activities, whether it be through vocational training, sport, music or art, the young adults are able to overcome the most severe aspects of autism or Down’s syndrome.
This is part of our mission to promote overall well-being in keeping with our holistic approach.

Our story
In 2009, on retiring from her post as a special-needs teacher and educational psychologist at the Office Médico-Pédagogique in Geneva, Marie-Françoise Bisson "Mary" decided to live in the north Indian holy city Banaras (Varanasi) for 7 months a year. There she started working as a full-time professional educational psychologist for the NGO Kiran Village as part of a consultation unit for children with physical or mental difficulties, focusing on parental involvement.
As the demand became increasingly targeted towards Autism and Down's syndrome, in 2012 Mary started to work towards the creation of a centre in Varanasi for this category of children. She wanted to work on early diagnosis of autism as it is still relatively unknown in India; she wanted particularly to include young children with Down's Syndrome in the project.
Thus, in November 2012 Mary started a small centre called Child Guidance Clinic open two hours a day, five mornings a week. Although Mary speaks basic Hindi, in order to build a better relationship with the children and parents, an Indian teacher took on the responsibility for English-Hindi translation. Working with parents was crucial because much of the time they do not understand what is going on with their child.
The Child Guidance Clinic soon became too small, and eventually the need arose for a proper full-time school with permanent educational and therapeutic support. Back in Geneva in summer 2014, Mary founded the Swiss association Enfant des Étoiles / Taaro ke Bacche to provide support to the school in Varanasi. Taaro ke Bacche means "children of the stars" in Hindi.
The school was inaugurated on 8th November 2014.
